Julie began playing violin at age 5 in the Suzuki method. She grew up
listening to classical music and Motown, and received her first taste of
musical immersion during summers at a northern Michigan music camp. She
continued studies and completed a degree in violin performance.
Following graduation, she undertook a year long, solitary journey in
Europe, where ostensibly, she studied violin pedagogy. During this
year, however, she became disillusioned with the typical goals of a
violinist - perfecting the standard repertoire and finding a position in
an orchestra or music school - and became aware that the standard
repertoire, even the aesthetic of Western tonality, was not adequate for
expressing herself. In an effort to create her own musical vocabulary,
she quit playing violin, choosing instead to explore writing and
noise-making, and eventually found her way into the international
experimental noise community. This brought her back to the violin, and
to New York. In NYC, Julie has found comradeship with musicians who
stretch the boundaries of their fields, including the duo SlowNoises,
AwRY, and the Luminescent Orchestrii. Julianne also teaches violin
privately and in the public schools. She earned her B.Mus. degree from
Lawrence University in 2001, and was a Thomas J. Watson Fellow from
2001-2002. She has attended the Meadowmount School of Music, and is a
registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
Julianne joined the Luminescent Orchestrii in late summer 2004.
